LATE NIGHT GUEST

MARCY

As I pulled into the grocery store parking lot, my phone rang, playing “Adore You.” I parked and answered. “Hey, I just got to the store,” I said, smiling even though Frank couldn’t see me.

“Babe, I’m sorry, I can’t make it over there tonight. My mom had a breakdown, and my dad and I are getting her into a facility. I just—” He sounded broken, and his voice cracked.

“It’s okay, go take care of your mom. I’ll be fine.”

“You sure? I can try to come later…”

“No, you need to be there for your dad too. Go be with them, it’s okay. I promise I’m fine.”

“Thanks, I’ll text you later, make sure you’re okay. And I’ll call you in the morning.”

I couldn’t believe he was still worrying about me with his mom going through what she was. It had to be so hard on her losing a son the way she had. Frank had been going to therapy after losing his brother, but being a mother, that had to be even worse.

“I’ll look forward to it,” I said softly.

“Me too, TT. Be safe.” He hung up.

I sighed and looked up at the grocery store. I debated going in and buying something to fix for dinner, but now, since Frank wasn’t coming over, I didn’t have an appetite anymore, and I didn’t want to cook for just me. I went in anyway and found a premade salad and some fajita chicken. After making my purchase, I returned to my car and headed home.

I doctored up the salad while the chicken heated in the microwave, and then I added the chicken to it too. I took the salad and a beer from my fridge to the living room and sat down on the sofa. Pulling up Prime, I began to stream Marlowe. Liam Neeson was good in everything, so I figured this detective movie was probably good too.

When it was over, I shut the TV down, tossed my salad container and beer bottle in the recycling bin, then headed to my bathroom for a shower. Afterwards, I sent Frank a quick text, just telling him I was thinking of him and that I hoped his mom was doing better.

A minute later he replied.
